State crimes are one thing; the Feds operate on a whole different level. Specific Federal legislation passed by the United States Congress and signed into law by the President governs these crimes. Outlined primarily, but not exclusively, in Title 18 of the United States Code, these crimes are often investigated by the FBI or other federal law enforcement agencies. The severity of sentencing in federal case can be mind-boggling and, unlike State Court Judges, Federal Judges have surprisingly little discretion in sentencing. The United States Attorneys Office has enormous power and discretion. Understanding this interplay, and having experience dealing with these agencies is critical.
